About Dr. Leggett

Philip L. Leggett, MD, is a board-certified laparoscopic and bariatric surgeon at his practice in Houston, with more than 30 years of experience in the field. His work as a minimally invasive surgeon is internationally recognized, and he’s the author of numerous medical publications.

After getting his undergraduate degree at the University of Texas at Austin, Dr. Leggett earned his medical degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston before completing his general surgery residency at the Ochsner Clinic in New Orleans.

A Houston native, Dr. Leggett is passionate about giving back to the community he calls home. That’s why he has spent the last three decades pioneering the innovation and adoption of advanced laparoscopic techniques, as well as integrated minimally invasive surgery into his own practice. With the right training, minimally invasive surgery results in shorter recovery times and hospital stays, less overall pain, and less noticeable scarring.

In addition to his extensive surgical experience, Dr. Leggett is a leader in treating acid reflux and diagnosing Barrett's esophagus. He’s a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the International College of Surgeons, as well as clinical assistant professor of surgery at the UT Health Science Center at Houston and at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. Dr.Leggett also serves as a fellow at the American College of Surgeons and is a member of SAGES and ASMBS. 

Dr. Leggett serves as program director for the Minimally Invasive Surgery Fellowship at Houston Northwest Medical Center, where he’s also chairman of the board.
